What you'll learn.

The six things that keep a planted tank clear. We cover what your tank needs most first.

  1. Reading your water

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and KH. What the numbers mean, and what to do when one is off.

  2. The water change

How much, how often, how to treat tap water, and how to match the temperature without a thermometer.

  3. Trimming and planting

Where to cut each kind of plant, and how to replant the tops so the tank fills in instead of thinning out.

  4. Reading algae and leaves

What each type of algae is telling you, and what a yellow, pale or holey leaf means.

  5. Keeping fish healthy

Spotting a sick fish early, when to move it out, and how to quarantine new fish before they go in.

  6. Your equipment

Cleaning the filter without crashing the tank. Light timing, heaters, and CO2 if you run it.

Two ways to learn.

Both are one on one, in your home, with the same routine we follow on our paid care visits.

Questions about coaching

Do I need my own test kit?

Not for the session. We bring ours. If you want to keep testing yourself, and you should, we'll tell you which kit to buy.

Can you coach me on a tank you didn't set up?

Yes. Most coaching happens on tanks people already own. Send a photo first and we'll tell you what we'd focus on.

Which course is right for me?

If your tank has been running for a while, start with tank coaching. If it's new, or you're about to set one up, the new keeper course takes you through the first six weeks, when most tanks go wrong.

Can the whole family join?

Yes. Kids pick it up fast, and it helps when everyone in the house knows the routine.

What kinds of tanks do you teach?

Freshwater tanks, from desk nanos to big planted tanks running CO2.

Can I book another session later?

Yes. Book tank coaching again any time, for new fish, a rescape or a problem you can't solve.
